THE MODEL
2005 Lotus Elise – Engineering Purity on Four Wheels
The 2005 Lotus Elise is a masterclass in lightweight engineering and mechanical feedback, engineered with a singular focus: driver involvement. Built on Lotus’ innovative bonded aluminum extruded chassis, the Elise achieves remarkable torsional rigidity while keeping curb weight to a mere 1,975 lbs (894 kg). This construction not only contributes to its scalpel-sharp handling but also serves as the platform’s defining characteristic.
Power comes from a 1.8L DOHC 16-valve inline-4 — the Yamaha-designed, Toyota 2ZZ-GE — featuring VVTL-i (Variable Valve Timing and Lift – intelligent). Lotus tuned this engine to produce 190 hp @ 7,800 rpm and 138 lb-ft @ 6,800 rpm, with an 8,500 rpm redline. Mated to a 6-speed close-ratio manual gearbox (C64 transmission), the Elise delivers linear power and thrives at the top end of the rev range — rewarding drivers who wring it out.
The chassis setup is a double wishbone suspension at all four corners, paired with Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers. This configuration, combined with a lack of power steering, offers unfiltered, highly communicative steering feel that’s become legendary among enthusiasts. Braking is handled by AP Racing calipers in the front and Brembo units in the rear, clamping down on vented and cross-drilled discs — more than sufficient considering the car’s featherweight build.
Aerodynamics are subtle but functional, with minimal drag and just enough downforce for stability at high speeds. The Elise rides on staggered 16-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels, shod in ultra-sticky Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 rubber from the factory.
Inside, it’s spartan — aluminum floors, exposed shift linkage, and fixed-back composite seats. Creature comforts are minimal, because they’re not the point. Everything here is function over form, designed to minimize mass and maximize connection.
The 2005 Elise isn’t just a car — it’s a case study in Colin Chapman’s ethos: "Simplify, then add lightness." It rewards precision, punishes sloppiness, and delivers a level of driver engagement few modern cars can touch.
THIS CAR
This is an exciting two owner Phantom Gray Elise. It's spent it's entire life in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our client purchased the car in 2007, it's part of a large collection for this noted enthusiast who is responsible for bringing us great driving events like the annual One Lap of Marin.
The car has been well cared for mechanically and needs absolutely nothing, other than to be driven! It is truly a mid-engine rocket.
