THE MODEL

To commemorate four decades of the 911 lineage, Porsche released the 40th Anniversary Edition in 2004 — a limited production model based on the 996.2 Carrera, but with significant mechanical and aesthetic enhancements aimed at purists and collectors.

Key Specs & Features:

  • Production: Limited to 1,963 units worldwide, honoring the 911’s 1963 debut

  • Engine: 3.6L M96/03 flat-six, factory-rated at 345 hp (vs. 320 hp in standard Carrera), thanks to the X51 Power Kit

  • Performance: 0–60 mph in ~4.6 sec, with improved mid-range torque and sharper throttle response

  • Drivetrain: Rear-wheel drive only, 6-speed manual transmission

  • Differential: Standard mechanical limited-slip differential (rare in 996 Carreras)

  • Suspension: Lowered sport suspension (M030) for enhanced handling dynamics

  • Wheels: Exclusive 18" Carrera II lightweight alloys

  • Color: All units painted in GT Silver Metallic (previously exclusive to the Carrera GT)

  • Interior: Graphite Grey full leather with aluminum trim, “911 40 Jahre” badging on dash and door sills, numbered plaque

  • Options: Most were heavily optioned — typically included heated sport seats, Bose sound, and xenon headlights

Notable Characteristics:

  • The 40th AE is often considered a spiritual bridge between the base Carrera and the 996 GT3, offering sharper performance while retaining daily usability.

  • With the X51 package, this is among the few non-GT 996s to receive factory internal engine upgrades: revised intake manifolds, higher-lift cams, and improved oiling.

  • It’s also one of the rare 996s to combine rear-wheel drive, a factory LSD, and the X51 kit — a configuration highly prized among 996 aficionados.

Values have steadily appreciated as the 40th AE represents a unique and well-rounded high point in the 996 lineup — especially given its limited numbers, mechanical upgrades, and analog driving experience. It is frequently regarded as one of the best-driving naturally aspirated 996s outside of the GT3.

THE CAR

This is a rare and special 2004 Porsche 40th Anniversary 911 Carrera.  It's live on Bring a Trailer and you will see that this is an alumni car, our client went through all the hard work of importing it into the US, so you don’t have to! It’s on a current California title and registration.

If you’re not familiar with the special limited edition 40th Anniversary Carrera, we encourage you to do a little research on these cars. This is just 1 of 1963 cars produced. It has a whole host of performance and styling upgrades from the regular 996 of the era.

This car is in great shape, it comes with a clean CarFax and has been titled, registred and smogged in California.  This is a great collector model for an enthusiast who loves the old school visceral 911 experience.
