THE MODEL

The 1992 Porsche 964 Cabriolet is a refined, open-top version of the 911 series' 964 generation, which marked a significant evolutionary step in Porsche’s history. Introduced in 1989 and running through 1994, the 964 retained the classic 911 silhouette but introduced major technological and mechanical advancements that helped modernize the legendary platform.

Engine & Performance

Under the rear decklid sits a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter flat-six (M64 engine) producing 247 horsepower and 228 lb-ft of torque. This powerplant was a notable improvement over its predecessor, offering smoother delivery, better reliability, and stronger mid-range torque.

  • 0–60 mph time: approximately 5.5–6.0 seconds

  • Top speed: around 160 mph

  • The engine is air-cooled, keeping with the traditional Porsche layout prior to the 996 generation.

Transmission & Drivetrain:

  • 5-speed manual gearbox, offering a pure and engaging driving experience

  • Or the optional 4-speed Tiptronic automatic, one of Porsche’s first steps toward automatic gearboxes in performance cars

The 1992 Cabriolet came in both:

  • Carrera 2 (rear-wheel drive)

  • Carrera 4 (with Porsche’s then-new all-wheel-drive system)

Chassis & Suspension

The 964 introduced coil spring suspension and MacPherson struts, replacing the traditional torsion bar setup used in previous 911s. This gave the car a more compliant and stable ride, improving both comfort and handling. ABS brakes and power steering became standard, bringing the 911 into a new era of drivability.

Exterior & Interior

The Cabriolet body style featured a fully automatic folding soft top, with optional wind deflector and a manual tonneau cover. While it retained the classic 911 curves, the 964 introduced integrated bumpers and smoother aerodynamic styling.

Inside, the 964 offered improved ergonomics, better climate control, and more creature comforts than older 911s, though it still retained a relatively analog and driver-focused cabin.

THE CAR
