THE MODEL
The 1988 BMW E28 M5 represents the final and only North American model year of the first-generation M5—an era-defining sports sedan that set the benchmark for the modern performance saloon. Hand-assembled in Dingolfing, Germany, the U.S.-spec E28 M5 came equipped with the revered S38B35 engine: a detuned but emissions-compliant evolution of the M88/3, itself derived from the M1 supercar’s powerplant. Producing 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque, the 3.5L DOHC inline-six features six individual throttle bodies, a forged bottom end, and a high-lift camshaft—all hallmarks of motorsport engineering.
Paired exclusively with a Getrag 280 5-speed manual and a 3.91 limited-slip differential, the E28 M5 delivered 0–60 in under 7 seconds—quick for its day—and boasted remarkably balanced dynamics thanks to its MacPherson strut front and semi-trailing arm rear suspension, reinforced with M-tuned components. Braking came from vented discs at all four corners, while the chassis benefited from subtle but meaningful reinforcements over the standard 535i.
Nearly all were finished in Jet Black over Natur (tan) leather, a result of BMW NA’s decision to offer only one configuration. This contrasts with the more varied European-market M5s, which were often lighter and more bespoke. Unique trim pieces include body-colored mirrors and bumpers, M-specific front and rear spoilers, and 16" BBS Mahle wheels.
The E28 M5 remains a purist’s choice: analog, mechanically engaging, and underpinned by BMW Motorsport’s early philosophy of blending touring comfort with race-bred capability. It’s not just the first M5—it’s arguably still one of the most visceral
THE CAR
Our client purchased the car in 2015 as a non-running project that had been in the back of a Rhode Island mechanic shop for over 5 years. It turns out the car was owned by former Boston Red Sox player Sam Horn. Our client made a deal with Sam and started turning this tired M5 into a wicked canyon carver hot rod.
In 2016 a windows out paint job was compeleted and the drive train rebuilt with polished bearings, VAC oil pump, with retainer nut and rev threads, and upgraded springs. NOS motorsport headers, super sprint exhaust, Coilovers with camber plates and the rear end was modified to be able to adjust rear camber.
8 series wheels, custom Cobra seats, a rollcage and a Haltech ECU round out the build. The car was recently dyno'd to 279 HP and 250 ft-lb of torque. This is one mean outlaw!
