THE MODEL

The 1980 Porsche 911 SC Targa represents a sweet spot in the G-body era, blending the robustness of the galvanized chassis with the mechanical purity of the air-cooled flat-six. Powered by the 3.0-liter CIS-injected engine producing 180 hp (U.S. spec), the SC offered improved torque and reliability over its 2.7-liter predecessors, making it a dependable classic.

The SC's aluminum engine case, forged connecting rods, and Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system contributed to its longevity and drivability, while the 915 5-speed gearbox—though sometimes maligned for its notchiness—offered period-correct engagement and feel. Targa models featured the removable roof panel and iconic brushed stainless steel roll bar, combining open-air motoring with added chassis rigidity compared to the Cabriolet that followed in 1983.

Suspension-wise, the SC retained the torsion bar setup with MacPherson struts up front and trailing arms in the rear, delivering the trademark tail-happy handling that defined the 911 driving experience—tempered slightly by the wider rear track and improved weight distribution. Braking came via vented discs all around, providing solid stopping power for the era.

Cosmetically, the 1980 model saw minor refinements, continuing with impact bumpers, black anodized trim, and optional front and rear spoilers (the "Whale Tail" and front chin spoiler combo). Inside, the cabin featured classic VDO gauges, sport seats as an option, and a layout that's functional, driver-focused, and unmistakably Porsche.

By 1980, the SC had proven its durability and had begun cementing its reputation as one of the most usable vintage 911s—a blend of analog charm, solid engineering, and daily usability. For purists, the Targa offers a unique middle ground: an open-top experience without sacrificing the coupe’s structural integrity.

THE CAR

Our client purchased this car in 2002 and began an 18 month rebuild of the engine and the transmission.  A master machinist at Mare Island Naval Base, our client was able to do a lot of work himself, farming out any necessary work to specialist around the bay area.  The interior received a refresh in 2006 and the Targa top and seals were all replaced and immediatately stored.

Decades later and only 4k miles onwards, this car looks, starts, drives just as it did when the restoration was completed.  You will be hard pressed to find a nicer SC targe with this mileage anywhere.  It's a real time warp machine harkening back to the 80's &d 90's of Porsche's legendary 911s!
