THE MODEL
The 1975 BMW 2002 represents the final chapter of one of BMW’s most iconic and influential models. As the last model year before the introduction of the E21 3 Series, the ’75 2002 embodies the culmination of a formula that defined the compact sports sedan genre—lightweight, responsive, and mechanically honest.
Powered by the venerable M10 2.0L SOHC inline-four, the U.S.-spec 2002 in 1975 produced 100 hp (net) and 106 lb-ft of torque, delivering its power through a 4-speed manual or optional 3-speed automatic. By this time, U.S. models were equipped with larger “diving board” bumpers to meet federal regulations, and emissions equipment like EGR and thermal reactors had dulled performance slightly compared to earlier models.
However, the essence of the 2002 remained intact: a communicative chassis with MacPherson struts up front, semi-trailing arms out back, rear-wheel drive, and a curb weight just over 2,300 lbs. Steering was direct, body control superb, and handling rewarded smooth inputs and momentum driving. Despite the emissions compromises, the car still delivered a pure, analog driving experience that few contemporaries could match.
For enthusiasts, the '75 model is significant—not for outright performance, but as the swan song of the Neue Klasse ethos. While it lacked the rawness of the earlier tii or ti variants, it preserved the 2002's core DNA: a driver's car in its most elemental form. It's a touchstone in BMW’s history, bridging post-war utilitarianism and the brand’s rise as a performance icon.
THE CAR
41 YEARS OWNERSHIP! This car was purchased by our client from the 2nd owner in 1984. We have service records going back to the early 80's! The engine was rebuilt by the noted BMW shop, Phaedrus of San Francisco, and the car repainted in it's original Amazon Green.
It's a lovely time capsule, unmodified, enjoyed and cared for. Who's going to be the caretaker for the next 40 years?
