THE MODEL

The 1971 BMW 1600-2 represents a critical juncture in BMW’s evolution, blending the lightweight ethos of the early Neue Klasse with the compact agility that would define the legendary 02 Series. Introduced in 1966 as the first of the 02 variants, the 1600-2 (later badged simply as “1602”) was a derivation of the Neue Klasse sedans—particularly the 1600 sedan—but reimagined with a shorter wheelbase (2,500mm vs. 2,670mm), reduced weight (~960 kg), and a sporting two-door layout. It was a deliberate move to capture a younger, more dynamic market segment without straying from BMW’s engineering-first principles.

Powered by the M10 engine, a SOHC 1.6L inline-four producing 85 hp (DIN), the 1600-2 showcased the versatility and durability of the M10 architecture, which had already underpinned the Neue Klasse’s success since 1961. The car’s precise MacPherson strut front suspension, semi-trailing arm rear setup, and communicative recirculating ball steering preserved BMW’s growing reputation for driving dynamics. While the 1600-2 was less powerful than later 02s like the 2002, its lighter weight and finely balanced chassis earned it a cult following among purists who appreciated momentum driving and feedback over brute force.

Crucially, the 1600-2 was the spiritual and mechanical precursor to the 2002—a car that would solidify BMW’s international identity as the maker of the “ultimate driving machine.” Its success validated the decision to diversify the Neue Klasse platform and demonstrated the viability of smaller, driver-focused models within the BMW lineup. The 1600-2 also laid the groundwork for BMW’s eventual motorsport ventures in Group 2 and Group 5, and paved the way for the turbocharged and injected variants that would follow.

The 1971 BMW 1600-2 embodies the Neue Klasse philosophy of advanced engineering, dynamic performance, and restrained design, distilled into a more compact, accessible package—effectively bridging the gap between the executive saloon and the enthusiast’s coupe.

THE CAR

This 1971 BMW 1600-2 was built on March 29th, 1971 and sent to BMW Italia in Palazzolo. It spent its entire life in the Bologna region of Italy before eventually being acquired by well known BMW specialists Oldenzaal Classics of the Netherlands. The cosmetics of the car were already spectacular. It’s sporting it’s original interior and had a respray in its original Malaga before Oldenzaal acquired it.

Oldenzaals went thoroughly through the car and serviced anything they saw that needed to be done to bring it up to tip top condition. As you can see in the listing, that was a very comprehensive job of going through the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, hoses and more.

Our client purchased it from Oldenzaal in 2021 and imported it to California.  They added Bilstein HD struts shocks and ST Suspensions sway bar.  This car is about as original as it can get.  An excellent example of the early Neue Classe models that saved BMW from the brink of bankruptcy.

Purchase this and show it all the car shows and then enjoy driving the back roads, more smiles per mile than most other cars on the street!
