THE MODEL
The 1970 Jaguar XKE Series II 4.2 Roadster represents the evolution of one of the most iconic sports cars of the 20th century. By 1970, Jaguar’s E-Type (XKE in North America) had matured in both design and performance while retaining the sensual lines and performance that made it a legend at launch in 1961.
At its heart is the robust 4.2-liter inline-six, an evolution of the XK engine, producing 246 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. With its smooth delivery and ample midrange grunt, the 4.2 balances performance and refinement, mated to a synchronized 4-speed Moss gearbox (later units featured improved gearboxes with better shift feel). While emissions regulations in the U.S. were beginning to soften performance, the Series II still offered spirited driving with a 0–60 time in the 7-second range and a top speed just shy of 140 mph.
The Series II brought several key updates—most visibly the open headlights without covers, larger front indicators, a wider grille for improved cooling, and wraparound rear bumpers. These changes, driven largely by U.S. safety and emissions regulations, subtly altered the purity of Malcolm Sayer’s original design, but added functional benefits like better lighting and improved engine cooling.
Inside, the toggle switches gave way to rocker switches to meet federal mandates, and headrests became standard. The cabin remained intimate and elegant, with Smiths gauges, leather upholstery, and wood-rimmed steering wheels preserving the classic British charm.
Mechanically, the Series II introduced dual Stromberg carburetors in U.S. spec models, replacing the triple SU HD8s, contributing to smoother operation but slightly reduced peak performance. The updated cooling system—featuring a larger radiator and twin electric fans—addressed the Series I’s overheating issues, especially important for hotter climates and modern driving conditions.
From a collector’s perspective, the Series II 4.2 Roadster occupies a sweet spot—offering the mechanical simplicity and purity of the early cars with meaningful improvements in drivability and reliability. While purists may lean toward the pre-1968 Series I models for their aesthetics, the Series II’s blend of usabili
THIS CAR
This car was acquired by the previous owner in 2010. A subsequent refurbishment involved stripping the body, placing it on a rotisserie, and refinishing it in gray, while the interior was re-trimmed in red leather and the 4.2-liter inline-six, suspension, differential, and brake system were overhauled. The car is equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, triple SU carburetors, a black soft top, 15″ knock-off wire wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, GAZ adjustable shocks, a stainless steel dual exhaust system, and a retro-look push-button radio with Bluetooth. This XKE is offered with a car cover, manufacturer’s literature, refurbishment photos, service records, and a clean Montana title in the seller’s name.
