THE MODEL
The ’69 Mach 1 equipped with the 428 Cobra Jet (R-code) remains one of the most desirable big-block Mustangs, combining Ford’s peak late-’60s styling with its most street-focused performance engine.
The CJ’s 428 cu in FE big-block, topped with functional Ram Air via the Shaker scoop, delivered a factory-rated 335 hp—famously underrated—with massive torque on tap (440 lb-ft). The combination of the aggressive Mach 1 package, competition-inspired suspension tuning, staggered rear shocks on 4-speed cars, and the 3.50 or optional 3.91 Traction-Lok gearing gave the R-code real muscle on the street and strip.
Visuals included the SportsRoof body, hood pins, matte-black hood treatment, and GT-style exhaust tips, while the interior featured high-back buckets and the signature wood-grain accents. Today, the ’69 Mach 1 428 CJ Ram Air stands as a benchmark for Ford’s big-block era—raw, torquey, and unmistakably purposeful.
THE CAR
This car was built in the Ford San Jose, CA plant and delivered to Beattie Motors in Monterey, CA on 3/14/69. It was sold to Roy Edwards who eventually moved and took the car to Flordia in October of 1976. From 1977-1981 it was sold a few times but stayed in Florida before moving to Marietta, GA in 1982. That owner kept the car until 1995. The next owner kept to for another 9 years before our client acquired the car in 2004.
With under 45k miles, this car is in remarkablely original condition. It features the famous 428 4V Cobra Jet Ram Air engine paired with a 4-speed close ratio manual transmission driving a traction-lok differential. It was ordered with Power front brakes and steering and the visibility group package. Even the optional Tilt-Away steering wheel works!
We believe the paint is original and the body extremely sound. This is a lovely, highly collectable muscle car, Ford at the peak of their powers!
