THE MODEL
The 1967 Fiat Dino Spider 2.0L, penned by Pininfarina, represents the purist expression of Fiat’s short-lived collaboration with Ferrari to homologate the Dino V6 for Formula 2. At its heart is the early, high-revving 2.0-liter all-alloy Ferrari V6 (Tipo 135) with triple Weber carburetors, sodium-filled valves, and a racing-derived 65° bank angle—an engine that rewards precise tuning and loves to spin past 7,000 rpm with characteristic Ferrari rasp.
The 2.0 Spider sits on a relatively light, steel monocoque chassis with a live rear axle and leaf springs—less sophisticated than the later 2.4’s independent rear, but also sharper, more delicate, and more eager to rotate. Period-correct Campagnolo magnesium alloys, a 5-speed manual, and four-wheel disc brakes round out a package that feels distinctly Italian: tactile steering, a playful rear end, and a willingness to be driven with the fingertips rather than brute force.
Visually, the first-series Spider is the most elegant and minimal of the Dino road cars—low-waisted, fluid, and unmistakably Pininfarina—contrasting with Bertone’s more angular Coupé. Fewer than 1,200 2.0 Spiders were built, making it one of the rarer ways to experience a road-going Ferrari V6 without Ferrari badging. For the knowledgeable enthusiast, the appeal lies in its mechanical purity, motorsport-driven origins, and the ephemeral moment in the ’60s when Fiat and Ferrari produced a genuinely collaborative driver’s car.
THE CAR
This car is serial # 000888, it is an Italian import, first purchased by Sobrero Riccardo who sold it to Maurice Poirer, a lecturer at Notre Dame Univesity in Indiana. It was imported into the US in July of 1976. Maurice kept the car for only a short time before placing an ad in Hemmings. Our client flew out to Indiana and purchased the car only a month later and drove it back to their home in Northern California. They have owned the car for 49 years!
The engine was rebuilt by Larry Buskirk of Marin in 1985 and later, the owner took the car off the road to do a restoration. It was originally silver, but they repainted it black. Currently the trim and interior pieces are removed, but the drive train is in place and the car rolls. It has reportedly not been started in 15 years. The project stalled as the owner's winery expanded and left them with little time to complete the project.
The chassis is solid, with what appears to be only very minor corrosion. All removed items come with the car and we have been told it is complete, but cannot confirm that.
This looks like a very good candidate for restoration by a knowledgeable Dino enthusiast. The car is currently on a clean, signed Illinios title from the previous owner. The current owner never titled the car and ran it in Northern California with it's original Italian plates.
