THE MODEL

The 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible is a quintessential American muscle car, continuing the legacy of the original 1964½ model, but refining and expanding its appeal. By 1966, the Mustang had firmly established its presence in the automotive landscape, offering a more mature and sophisticated option for the burgeoning pony car market.

Powered by a range of engines, from the standard 200-cubic inch inline-six to the more powerful 271-hp 271-cubic inch V8, the 1966 Mustang Convertible offered ample performance options for a variety of driving preferences. The base engine was the 6-cylinder, but enthusiasts quickly flocked to the 289-cubic inch V8, which provided a good balance between power and drivability. The 271-hp "K-code" V8 was available for those seeking a more high-performance variant, bringing the Mustang closer to muscle car territory.

The exterior design featured subtle updates from the original 1965 model, including a more pronounced grille and refined side scoop, giving the car a sportier, yet elegant look. The "convertible" body style added to the allure, with a power-operated top that lowered in seconds, giving owners an open-air experience that was a hallmark of the Mustang's versatility.

Inside, the Mustang Convertible retained its classic, driver-centric interior with a wide array of options, including a four-speed manual or the smooth-shifting three-speed automatic. The dashboard was functional but stylish, and customers could opt for trim

packages like the GT or the Luxury Group, which offered upgraded materials, trim, and interior features.

The suspension was tuned for a balance between comfort and sportiness, and with the addition of power steering and power brakes as options, the 1966 Mustang Convertible was as much a pleasure to drive as it was to look at.

For the discerning enthusiast, the 1966 Ford Mustang Convertible stands as a hallmark of Ford’s ability to blend style, performance, and practicality, all while staying true to its muscle car roots. With its rich engine options, elegant design, and spirited driving experience, it remains a prized possession in the classic car world, with a solid fan base and increasing collector value.

THE CAR

This car has an amazing story, the owner purchased the car on December 4th, 1988 from his pediatrician when they were only 15 years old! They've had it for 37 years where they have lovingly brought it up to the restored state it is in today.  Some of the work our client has done during his time with the car include:

  • Repainted 10 years ago.

  • Top is brand new (it has a glass split window, which isn't original)  original had a plastic window

  • Added disc brakes.  This was very expensive.

  • Rally rims - these are reproductions of the originals. I bought these ~30+ years ago

  • Tires with exterior writing

  • Chrome headers

  • Performance sway bars

  • Upgraded suspension - shocks

  • Dual exhaust

  • The whole interior was redone - carpets, dash, everything - this was done shortly after I bought the car.

  • Engine dress up kit - chrome air cleaner, cobra engine covers, oil cap

  • Replaced carburetor

  • Upgraded engine fan

  • New windshield wiper unit / container

  • Added a power brake booster

  • Brand new battery

  • Replaced heater core in 2025
