THE MODEL
The 1963 Lancia Flaminia 2.8 3C Convertible was one of the most elegant and technically sophisticated open-top grand touring cars of the early 1960s. Built by Lancia and styled by Carrozzeria Touring using its lightweight “Superleggera” aluminum construction method, the car combined understated Italian luxury with advanced engineering and rarity.
Introduced as the ultimate evolution of the Flaminia convertible line, the 2.8 3C featured a 2.8-liter all-alloy V6 engine fed by three Weber carburetors — the “3C” designation standing for “triple carburetor.” Producing around 150 horsepower, it was capable of near-120 mph performance while retaining the refinement expected of a flagship Lancia. The car also employed advanced mechanical features for its era, including four-wheel disc brakes, independent front suspension, and a rear-mounted transaxle for balanced handling.
The convertible’s origins are especially interesting: the Touring-designed body had originally been intended for a Maserati project that never materialized. Lancia acquired the design and adapted it to the Flaminia chassis, resulting in one of the company’s most graceful cars. Only about 180 examples of the 2.8-liter convertible were built, making surviving cars exceptionally rare and highly collectible today.
Visually, the Flaminia 2.8 3C Convertible embodied restrained sophistication rather than flamboyance. Its long hood, delicate chrome trim, airy greenhouse, and hand-built aluminum body gave it an effortless elegance often compared to contemporary Mercedes-Benz 300SE Cabriolet models — though with distinctly Italian flair. Enthusiasts frequently describe the Flaminia as “the Italian Mercedes” because of its engineering quality, composure, and craftsmanship.
THE CAR
Welcome to this rare and stunning 1963 Lancia Flaminia 2.8 3C Convertible. One of only 180 examples built, this one in Argent Auteuil (silver) with Pony Red leather interior!
Originally completed 12/10/1963, this car was stored at the Lancia Factory until 1968. It was sold to Guy Arnault, who was living in Djibouti, Africa. He registered this car in Torino, Italy and used it sparingly until driving it to France, registering it und the number plate 8517 RK 36. It sat quietly until 2008.
In early 2010, the car was sold at Retromobile Paris, with only 15,050km on the clock. Jules Heumann, Co-chair of Pebble Beach, brought it stateside and began the first round of restoration work. Upon completion of that work, the ODO was reset.
In 2011 it came into the collection of Manny Del Arroz, a very large SF Bay Area collector. As part of the collection, it sat unused for much of that time until our client found it on Bring a Trailer.
The current owner, a thoughtful and careful collector has done an amazing amount of detective work into the history of this car. They also spent over $52,000, bringing the car to it’s current concours level state.
This car needs nothing, simply to be enjoyed and shown by it’s new caretaker.
