THE MODEL
The 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W121) is one of the most elegant and recognizable European sports cars of the early 1960s. It was conceived as a more accessible, road-going companion to the legendary 300 SL, sharing some of that car's visual DNA while offering a much more relaxed grand-touring character.
The 190 SL uses a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine, producing approximately 105 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Unlike the 300 SL, it was designed primarily for comfortable road use rather than outright performance. Acceleration is modest by modern standards, but the car's appeal lies in its smoothness, proportions, craftsmanship and open-air driving experience.
Stylistically, the 190 SL is quintessential early-1960s Mercedes. It has a long hood, upright grille, rounded fenders, chrome bumpers and a compact two-seat cabin. The removable soft top is complemented by an optional removable hardtop, making the car unusually versatile for its era.
THE CAR
This car is a two owner lifetime California car. The current owner's father acquired the car in 1965. The car was used by the first owner to travel back and forth between homes in Northern and Southern California. After it was acquired in 1965 it was a fixture around Marin and San Francisco. The car has now travelled 163k miles!
In 2011, the engine was rebuilt (less than 3000 miles ago). In 2012 it went to Frank Zucchi for a complete bare metal restortation. FZ Restoration are well known for their Pebble Beach level quality restorations and this one was a side project for the firm and finally completed in 2025.
After the restoration was complete, it went to SL Werke Shop in Benicia, CA to have all the mechanical systems refreshed. It's now presents in show condition and is an excellent driving 190 with a the extremely rare sunroof hardtop option!
