THE MODEL
The 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale is a masterpiece of Italian automotive design, blending sleek aesthetics with performance. Styled by the legendary Franco Scaglione at Bertone, its aerodynamic lines and distinctive curves are a testament to the era's obsession with speed and elegance. Powered by a 1.3-liter twin-cam engine producing around 100 horsepower, the Giulietta Sprint Speciale was not just a pretty face; it offered spirited performance that matched its sporty looks. With its lightweight construction and balanced handling, it was a joy to drive on winding roads. The car's rarity and beauty have made it a coveted piece in the world of classic cars, cherished by collectors who appreciate its blend of art and engineering.
THE CAR
This 1961 Giulietta Sprint Speciale was built on March 13th 1961 and sold in Lugano, Switzerland on March 17th of that same year. The owner was a Swiss Chef, Hans. He later emigrated here to the states and brought the car with him. At the end of 1988 he offered it for sale here in Redwood City.
The current owner’s husband, Sam, and noted Alfa mechanic Tom Sahines went to see the car which was purported to be ‘rust free’. It indeed looked very good and Sam purchased it. He was an internationally recognized artist and had a vision to make this the very best Sprint Speciale he could. After owning Sprints, Spiders, Supers and the like, this would be his finest automotive work.
Soon after acquiring the car he stripped it down and it was indeed rust free! He repainted it the correct ‘Alfa Red’ color and sent the motor over to Tom for a rebuild. It was an easier canvas for Sam to work on, and he became obsessed about making sure that every screw and other items as perfect as possible and correct for the car.
If you were in the Alfa scene in Northern California in the 1990’s & 00’s, you’d very likely met Sam and seen this lovely SS. It won awards at many shows, but it had a special connection to the Concorso Italiano. The car was awarded Best Alfa in 2007. Sam was contacted by the show in 2009; they asked him to show his car next to the the three Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica cars for a special Bertone exhibit.arms.
