THE MODEL
This is the third generation of Chrysler New Yorkers and ran from 1949-1954. In 1954, it originally had a 195hp FirePower V8 engine, with a Deluxe version offering 235hp. They had a two-speed Powerflite automatic transmission.
THE RACE
The Carrera Panamericana ran from 1950 - 1954 before being cancelled due to the world-wide concern about automobile racing safety following the 1955 LeMans tragic accident. Famous racing competitors in the race included: Bill France, Mickey Thompson, Clay Smith, Bill Vukovich, Alberto Ascari, Juan Manuel Fangio, Carroll Shelby, Dan Gurney, Richie Ginther, Phil Hill and Piero Taruffi, making it one of the most diverse races on the planet.
After it's cancelation, the race was eventually revived in 1988 and was turned into another world-class vintage events with cars of the period being highly modified to compete in this 7-day 2300+ mile event over open roads in Mexico. A truly strenuous race for both driver and vehicle, attrition rates are extremely high.
THIS CAR
This car first ran the La Carrera Panamericana in 2001 where it purportedly finished first in the historic Pan-Am class. Originally prepared by racing driver Lem Tolliver. Purchased by the current owner in 2011, he raced the car to podiums in 2011, 2012 & 2013. In 2012, it also ran the Chihuahua Express. Since then, it has been driven on the road, other rallies and is a fan favorite at CSRG events at all of the local Northern California race tracks. In addition, it has been shown at concours events like the Hillsborough Concours where it was a featured guest.
Important note: This car is still registered for the street!
Many La Carrera Panamericana cars are titled as race cars only. This car would make an excellent multi-day rally entrant and will turn all the heads at events like the California Mille, Colorado Grand, etc...
Race prep and maintenance has been performed by the famed restoration shop, Pit Stop Automotive. No expense has been spared on the preparation of this car. It has been religiously maintained by the current owner and is ready to get on a track or long rally tomorrow!
