THE MODEL
The 1951 Jaguar XK 120 Roadster is a landmark British sports car that seamlessly blends postwar design elegance with groundbreaking performance. Powered by Jaguar’s 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six—derived from their experimental XK engine program—the XK 120 produced an impressive 160 bhp in standard form, propelling it to a verified top speed of 120 mph, hence the name.
The lightweight, hand-formed aluminum bodywork of early production models gave way to steel in 1950, but the purity of the original roadster design (Open Two Seater, or OTS) remained intact: a minimalist cockpit, removable side screens, and a folding canvas top designed with function over luxury.
Underneath, a robust box-section chassis with torsion-bar front suspension and semi-elliptic rear leaf springs offered handling that, while not razor-sharp by modern standards, was more than capable for the era—particularly on long, sweeping roads. Drum brakes at all four corners, though serviceable, required experienced modulation during spirited driving.
The 1951 model year marked a pivotal moment in the XK 120's evolution, sitting at the crossroads of early aluminum-bodied exclusivity and broader steel-bodied production. Still coveted by collectors for its raw, unfiltered driving experience and its historical significance as a Le Mans progenitor, the XK 120 remains one of the most iconic British sports cars of the 20th century.
