THE MODEL

The "De Luxe" name goes all the way back to Ford Model A's, but Ford  began in 1938, a brand within a brand as a more luxurious addition to its Standard models. Of the almost 1/2 million cars Ford produced in 1939, only just over 10,000 were Convertible Coupes. Starting in 1939 was the addition of hydraulic drum brakes and it was also the last year of the rumble seat for the extremely distinctive Convertible Coupes.

Also in 1939, the 221 cu in flathead was improved with a bigger crankshaft and heavier connecting rods.  Compression was raised to 6.2:1 along with new 24-stud cylinder heads.

THIS CAR

This particular 1939 Ford Deluxe Convertible Coupe was found by Don Allison of Cleveland, Georgia in the early 2000's. He embarked on a bare metal restoration of this convertible coupe, he showed the Deluxe Convertible Coupe extensively upon completion and it received many awards.

Here's a list of the awards from the Antique Automobile Club of America:

  • 10/02: First Junior - Eastern Fall Meet, Hershey PA

  • 3/03: Senior Award - Southeastern Winter Meet, Orlando, FA

  • 7/04: First Grand National - Annual Grand Nationals, Buffalo, NY

  • 7/04: First Preservation Award - Annual Grand Nationals, Buffalo, NY

  • 6/06: Senior Grand National - Annual Grand Nationals, Dover, DE

  • 6/06: Repeat Preservation - Annual Grand Nationals, Dover, DE

The current owner acquired the car in 2012 while seeing it at a show and admiring the amazing restoration efforts Don put in. It is currently part of a large collection, kept in top running condition with a private collection mechanic. Presenting in that same show winning condition, the Deluxe Convertible Coupe has travelled less than 400 miles since the restoration was completed. With it's heritage and superb restoration, this '39 would be a welcome entrant at just about any major concours show or rally event.
