THE MODEL
The 1932 Ford roadster is an enduring icon of American automotive history, celebrated for its sleek lines, lightweight body, and adaptable chassis. Originally introduced as part of Ford’s groundbreaking V8 lineup, the ’32 roadster quickly became a favorite among early hot-rodders for its blend of style, simplicity, and performance potential. Its open-top design, distinctive grille shell, and classic “Deuce” silhouette lend it a timeless appeal that continues to captivate builders and enthusiasts. Whether restored to factory form or transformed into a period-correct hot rod, the 1932 Ford roadster stands as a symbol of innovation, individuality, and the golden age of garage-built speed.
THE BUILDER
Vern Tardel is considered one of the master builders of traditional hot rods. Based in Santa Rosa, California at his famed Flat Head Ranch, Vern keeps a large collection of original parts during his builds. He is an author of 13 different books and pamphlets on building hot rods. Vern no longer builds new cars, instead focusing his attention on assisting clients in keeping their hot rods in tip top shape.
THE CAR
This is a 1932 Ford Roadster hot rod, built just the way they would have done it back in the 1950’s. A traditional hot rod with a 1948 Mercury flathead V8, it has a Brookville steel body, but the rest of the build was accomplished using primarily original parts from the builder’s supply. This is simply a stunning machine.
Our client’s husband commissioned the build by Vern and his team back in 2011/12 and the build was completed in 2013 when it moved to its new home in Reno, Nevada. Noted flathead specialist Tom Bachelor (who formerly worked for Bill Harrah’s collection) was a good friend of the owner and oversaw the build and added his own touches.
A new Brookville steel body was used over an original 32 chassis. Along with that '48 Mercury Flathead, it also has a reconditioned and improved 1939 3-speed manual transmission. A new LeBaron Bonney interior and and convertible top were used.
It starts well and drives great. The Ford Cloud Mist Gray paint with wheels and accents in Ford Apple Green is as stunning in person as it is in the pictures. Whether you’re a hot rod collector or looking to perhaps purchase your first one, this is an absolutely great choice to add to your collection!
