1973 VW THing - TYPE 181

THE MODEL

Originally designed by VW to be an inexpensive, durable military transport vehicle, the Type 181 was then made available to the consumer under different model names depending on the country.  In the US, the 'Thing' was sold from 1972-1975.  As far back as 2007 Motor Trend magazine had hallmarked the Thing as a 'Collectable Classic'.

With a simple to fold down convertible top, stowable side curtains and a fold down windshield, the Thing became a beloved vehicle for it's simplicity and reliability.  Today, they hold their place with the Beetle and the Bus as one of the most distinctive Volkswagens of all time.

THIS CAR

This 1973 VW Thing has been in California since at least 2015.  The current owner, a driving enthusiast, had a newly rebuilt engine installed, new front disc brakes and work on the shifter, resulting in an excellent driving Thing.  There are currently only break-in miles on the rebuilt engine.

This Thing presents extremely well, it's in very good shape with only some small amount of surface rust on the undercarriage, the top is in excellent shape with the exception of one small 2" tear at the seam in the top left window.  For anyone looking for a Thing to get out and enjoy in the real world, this is your car!
