THE MODEL
The 1956 Buick Special Convertible (Series 40, Model 46C) was Buick’s entry-level open-top model for 1956, combining the dramatic styling of a mid-1950s American cruiser with Buick’s newly enlarged V8 power. It was a six-passenger, two-door convertible built on a 122-inch wheelbase, with a long 205.1-inch body and distinctive Buick styling—including the sweeping “Sweepspear” side trim, three VentiPorts per front fender, rounded rear wheel openings, and prominent “Dagmar” front bumper elements.
For 1956, the Special received Buick’s 322-cubic-inch Fireball V8, fitted with a two-barrel carburetor and rated at approximately 220 hp and 319 lb-ft of torque. A three-speed manual was standard, while Buick's Dynaflow automatic was available.
The convertible was relatively substantial at about 3,880 pounds, but its V8 gave it respectable performance for the era. Contemporary-oriented specifications put the Dynaflow-equipped car around the 100-mph mark in theoretical top speed.
THE CAR
Our client purchased this car 48 years ago. He acquired it on July 7th, 1978, in Susanville, CA. It has been a California car all its life. Our client is a very meticulous collector who has many show quality cars from the 50's and 60's. This car had 89k miles on the clock when he purchased it and the engine was rebuilt in 1986; it now has just under 12k miles on that rebuild.
In 2005 the car was completely stripped and a bare metal paint job was performed in its original color. Vintage Vehicles has meticulously maintained the car since 1995. Recent work includes shocks and suspension work as well as a full service.
Our understanding is that these cars are quite rare, we believe there are only 55 registered in the USA. The car drives exceptionally well and its overall condition is excellent. It stands ready to be the pride of place at a local cars and coffee, parade or vintage car show! The car currently needs nothing but a new owner to enjoy, so put that top down and head out on the road!
